As the financial crisis in Europe deepens Britain has plunged into the worst level of unemployment seen for 17 years after another 128,000 joined the jobless ranks, taking the total to 2.64 million. A series of grim figures delivered a pre-Christmas blow to the Government, with youth and female unemployment showing the biggest rises and the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance increasing for the ninth month in a row. Today's news comes as travel giant Thomas Cook added to the gloom by announcing more than 600 job losses and 115 shop closures while High Street retailer La Senza called in the accountants to carry out a restructuring. Employment fell by 63,000 in the quarter to October to 29.11million, while the number of people working in the public sector dipped below six million for the first time since 2003. The unemployment rate is now 8.3 per cent, up 0.4 per cent on the quarter - the highest since 1996 - while the jobless total is now worse than at any time since 1994. Unemployment among 16 to 24-year-olds increased by 54,000 to 1.03million, the highest since records began in 1992. FACTS:
The English Democrats believe that successive governments have sold out of the future of English workers. Successive governments have always bowed to globalism and have allowed our manufacturing base to be eroded by cheap imports from the developing world. The crisis we are facing now is due to rampant globalism. The English Democrats promote expansion of our manufacturing sector and halt the trend towards an over-reliance on service industries. It is a fallacy that manufacturing industry is low-tech metal-bashing which can be replaced with service industries. Most of the service sector does not provide high-tech jobs. Catering, retailing, warehousing, and call-centre work is mostly low-tech, low paid work. The aerospace, electronics, pharmaceutical, and engineering industries should be the bedrock of our economy and the core around which a high-skill, high-pay service sector is built. In furtherance of this policy, and in the interests of a healthy economy, there should be an industrial policy which promotes and expands manufacturing industry. Manufacturing is an essential part of a modern and prosperous economy.
