Today English Democrat Chairman Robin Tilbrook has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London. Robin attended Guildhall where he was made a Freeman of the City of London by the order of the court of Aldermen. One of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today is the granting of the Freedom of the City of London. The Freedom of the City of London was first recorded in 1237 but dates back to Saxon times. It is closely tied to the role and status of the Livery Companies. From 1835 the Freedom "without the intervention of a Livery Company" has been bestowed by a general resolution of Common Council.The status of Freeman is still thriving in many other towns and cities in England. Each town or city where the admission of Freemen is carried out has its own regulations and customs for admission. The English Democrats are committed to preserving English traditions such as this. The grant of honorary freedom in the United Kingdom is governed by the Local Government Act 1972. The 1972 Act enabled the councils of cities, royal boroughs, boroughs, and parishes with the status of a royal town, to confer the status of honorary freeman on "persons of distinction and persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services" to the local area. Robin was presented with an impressive sealed certificate by the Chamberlain of the City. Robin said: 'I am delighted to be a part of an ancient English tradition, the historical roots of which go back to the time of King Alfred the Great.' As a new comer to the ED's from another political party, may I say how refreshing it is to learn of something concerning the leader of one's political party without the story having the unnecessary and tiresome negative publicity has was generally the case with the leader of my former political party. Well done Mr Tillbrook and congratulations!!!

An event such as this, in the political party of which I was a member, would have become an unseemly circus, creating an abundance of negative publicity.
I'm unaccustomed to seeing such modesty and decorum. Well done, and, congratulations Mr. Tillbook on receiving such an honour.
