Campaign for an English Parliament:

alt

The English Democrats want to see England get a fair democratic say. We believe that England needs its own parliament. Both Scotland and Wales have been recognised as seperate countries giving the Scottish and Welsh a greater say in how their country is run.

With the UK split into 4 main regions (England, Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales) we need equality and fairness of treatment across the 4. It is an outrage that England pays for Scotland to have home rule. It is also an outrage that the current Parliament has MPs from the other 3 regions determing laws etc. for England.

And I thought Britain stood for Diversity and Fairness ? Does seem that this is not the case. More equal and diverse for some. Certainly not for English people.

Before asking for a parliament, shouldn't we make it clear exactly what it is we want and the powers we expect our own parliament to have? The same as those in Scotland and Wales? Is the tail wagging the dog now?

What do we want? A fully-elected chamber? Using FPTP or full PR? MEPPs (Members of the English People's Parliament) elected on a constituency basis or a list system based on the nine English regions? I know it's an EU construct and one which may make Europhobes implode with rage, but it would at least ensure no one region dominates. In a 100-200 seat chamber each region would have 11-22 MEPPs with London allowed just one or two more. Should we ever again trust politicians to have the only say? Should we introduce a People's Parliamentarians element? 100-200 (chosen at random - just like jury service) to sit three times a year and play a major part in deciding which legislation is approved or voted down and which policies adopted or dismissed? The Government would need a simple majority in both groups in order to get its way.

What powers would an English parliament have? What kind of wider system would it sit in? An unchamged UK (hardly likely)? A federal system? A loose confederacy (even less likely given just how bitter things might get before we have sense to sort out the mess caused by devolution)? How do we loosen Westminster's grip? What role would it play? Should it be reduced to a one-chamber UK Senate? Looking after what? Foreign Policy and Defence? Economic policy? Is it likely all four countries would ever agree on the latter (given Westminster's dire record on economic matters)?

I want a parliament for England. What I don't want is a chamber run in any of the old ways which have utterly ruined us. The ways of dinosaur parties too self-absorbed to care much about the country or its people. Parties overrun with politicians who appear to have no obvious talent other than the ability to bring ruin on everything they touch.

I have yet to see a party which represents me. I have never bought into the nonsense of Britishness. I'm English and I want to reclaim my flag and 2,000 years of recorded history and culture from the racists, the dimwits and the Europhobes. I like Europe but hate the way the EU is run. If we hadn't wasted four decades sniping from the sidelines like a ten year old girl at a birthday party who felt she wasn't properly thanked for the present she brought, things might be very different. But our politicians, like our footballers, have rings run around them in Europe because our political system ensures far too many dolts are elected to Westminster because we vote for party rather than the ability (or lack of it) of the candidate.

Is the English Democrats the party for me? I'm not in the least bit sure because I'm not sure what the ED stands for in practice. What would it do if it was handed power tomorrow? I am sure that none of the main parties, all Unionists no matter that it makes less and less sense with each day that passes, will ever get my vote again.

Wouldn't it be better for the English Democrats to launch these petitions on Direct.gov? Bigger impact, access to more people and potential supporters etc.

Ideally, I would like separate political representation for all the nations of the British Isles who come together in a federation to work internationally and outside of the EU. That would include Ireland if they wanted it.

Essentially the existence of the Scottish Parliament means that England should have an equivalent body. And the English Democrats should change their name to the English National Party to signal this. Presumably the democrats in the title was a defensive measure against a constant assumption that any assertion of English nationhood is fascist. Why do we let this conflation be made?

I agree with volenteer28 that petitions are launched on Direct.gov. I have started one so lets see if I can get support . I enclose details.

English Members of Parliament
Responsible department: Cabinet Office
I want a ruling that English M.P's are English by birth and have been in England for at least three generations. I want the the government to ban Scots , Irish , and Welsh candidates for standing for election in England .

I believe in an English Parlement, not an independent one, by definition that has to work within a Federal Britain' my problem is that I would need concrete assurances that it is the intentions of the English Democrats not to evolve into a party calling for full Independence,I have in the past been a staunch supporter of the Btitish Union, and but for the unfair system that is here today still would be.My problem is that I always get the impression that you say Federal when I meet your supporters, but their body language gives me the impression that they would like to take that one step further into full independence

England is the only country which does not have its own parliament. How can that be, how can it allowed to remain like this?
Something has to be done; England can’t drift along doing nothing as it has arrogantly and complacently done in the past, indulging the others while they carried on with their nation building, and at the same time paying for it, as if somehow the conflicting interests would resolve themselves, and the English would not need to be troubled. But we can no longer ignore what’s happening around us.
But what can we English do? Some say that in the future each nation could be self-governing, with a ‘Union’ or ‘Federal’ parliament, to look after the wider interests of the constituent nations, but there are grave doubts about whether that could work.

But there can be no federal or other solution without a first a parliament for England, so that must be our priority. How do we get one? We must campaign for it, demonstrate, write to MP’s, and the media, ask direct questions; put them on the spot, challenge their evasions and hypocrisy. Alongside this though we should awaken our English identity, which must include our Anglo-Saxon heritage, increasingly seen as rich and varied; we must stop apologizing and regain our self-confidence. At one level this can be done by promoting unifying symbols, and the biggest symbol we can use is the flag of St George, if we see this more often, we will see ourselves more as English, as we see our identity reflected back to us.
We should get the popular flag of St George flying, by businesses and on public buildings, demand change.

This is not the Campaign for an English Parliament

Just for the avoidance of doubt as there have been numerous attempts by the English Democrats to imply links between their party and the Campaign for an English Parliament, this is not related to the non-partisan campaign group, the Campaign for an English Parliament (http://www.thecep.org.uk).

For my own part I do not want a repetition of the House of Commons with its crowd of bleating, mooing, sleeping, oafs?
Do we want an English Government meeting in that nineteenth century museum, on the Thames at Westminster?
Do we want a Government that convenes using that ridiculous idea so loved by some people of an ' Unwritten Constitution'?
Do we want to have our affairs decided by a single chamber of parliament?
Should we not consider an English Assembly having two parliamentary chambers with slightly different remits.
Giving people an opportunity to vote at a governmental level against unpopular administrations
We need an English Government that has clearly defined written constitutional powers and in which there are clearly stated checks and balances to prevent an opportunistic Government taking dictatorial powers.
Nor, personally speaking, do I wish for a the any member of the Royal family having any input into the the Constitutional process.
I suggest that the post of Lord Chancellor is restored as an elected post by the new second chamber or elected by the public and with powers as final decision maker.
But ' English House of Commons mark 2', no thank you.
