English Democrats Third in Barnsley

English Democrats' candidate Kevin Riddiough came a respectable third place in yesterday's by-election in the St Helen's ward in Barnsley. This was the party's first time standing in the ward.

The English Democrats managed to comprehensively beat the Tories and the independent candidate but were narrowly beaten by the BNP who saw their vote in the ward continue to fall from a high of over 30% down to just over 10%.

The winner by a large margin was the Labour Candidate, Dave Leech, who took 75.8% of the vote – slightly down on the Labour result in May. The Tories managed to slip even further behind losing over half their share of the vote.

This was Kevin and the English Democrats' first time standing in the St Helens Ward and has given the party a solid to base to build upon. We would like to thank Kevin and the campaign team for all their hard work.

You can see the full result below:

Lab - 1257 - 75.8% (-3.5%)
BNP - 174 - 10.5% (-1.6%)
English Democrats - 146 - 8.8% (+8.8%)
Con - 61 - 3.7% (-4.9%)
IND - 21 - 1.3% (+1.3%)

Following on from Edwin’s comments I seriously believe that the remaining 60-70% of people that do not bother voting are all English Democrat voters waiting to happen. EVERYONE I used to speak to about politics said “I would vote but there is no one worth voting for.” I myself was one of those people. The tide is turning and people are waking up. We need a massive campaign to make people aware of this party. Still to this day some of my friends haven’t even heard of English Democrats until I mention it. They then come back to me after viewing the website and tell me “I will be voting for them this time round” I myself will be voting for the English Democrats as soon as I get the chance. I seriously believe there is HUGE potential for this party.
