English Democrats By-Election Results

Yesterday the English Democrats fought two by-elections. The first was the Feltham and Heston parliamentary by-election in London, the second was a council by-election in Billericay in Basildon, Essex.

The Parliamentary by-election in Feltham and Heston attracted the most attention, but the media largely ignored even this contest and the turn-out was very low. There was less interest in this by-election than usual as it is a fairly safe Labour seat.

This was the first time the English Democrats have fought the seat. The campaign was not a high profile campaign, although it did see several days of action from local activists and had a full colour glossy leaflet which can be seen here.

The result was as follows:

Labour - 12, 639 votes (54.4%)
Conservative – 6,436 votes (27.7%)
Liberal Democrats – 1,364 votes (5.9%)
UKIP – 1,276 votes (5.5%)
BNP – 540 votes (2.3%)
Green – 426 votes (1.8%)
English Democrats (Roger Cooper) – 322 votes (1.4%)
London People Before Profit – 128 votes (0.6%)
Bus-Pass Elvis Party – 93 votes (0.4%)

For a first time result this was not bad at all and shows clear progress for the party. We have a received a number of good enquiries and have raised our profile in the area – something which will no doubt assist in our GLA campaign next May.

The second by-election was in Billericay. The local English Democrat activists ran a low-key campaign consisting of a couple of leaflet drops. The party managed to establish a bit of local identity and polled a reasonable vote.

The result was as follows:

Conservatives - 365 votes (59.2%)
UKIP – 202 votes (32.7%)
English Democrats (Tony Gladwin) – 50 votes (8.1%)

This was not an easy ward for the English Democrats with both the Conservatives and UKIP putting in strong campaigns. In fact, the last time this ward was contested the Conservatives did not stand and UKIP won the seat with 57% of the vote. However, this time the Conservatives did contest it and won by an out-right majority. Curiously Labour did not choose to fight this seat.

We would like to congratulate both Roger Cooper and Tony Gladwin on their results and thank them and the local activists for their hard work on both by-elections.
