An Englishman's Home is his Castle

Over the past 20 years successive governments have slowly eroded the rights of property owners and given criminals protections under new laws. This week saw a major victory for homeowners and for common sense.

This week an elderly florist who stabbed an armed raider to death was told he will not face criminal charges. The English Democrats are pleased with the outcome of this case and view it as both a victory for common sense and for ‘people power’.

Cecil Coley, 72, was playing dominoes with a friend in his family shop in Old Trafford, Manchester, when four masked men armed with knives and guns forced their way in and demanded the takings.

During the ensuing struggle a pistol was fired but the florist grabbed a knife from the shop counter and lashed out, causing one of the raiders, Gary Mullings, to reel back with a serious stab wound to his chest. The 30-year-old dropped his pistol, staggered out into the street and collapsed. He later died.

Nafir Afzal, chief crown prosecutor for the North West, said of the July raid: ‘It is difficult to envisage a more frightening set of circumstances than these. Four men, armed with guns and a knife, forced their way into the shop.

‘Mr Coley received a number of injuries, including a serious facial injury, and his friend was knocked unconscious. At some point in the incident one of the guns, a blank firing pistol, was fired.

‘All the evidence indicates that when Cecil Coley took hold of a knife that was on the shop counter and struck out with it, he was acting in a way that he felt instinctively necessary to protect himself, whilst fearing for his life.’

The English Democrats' manifesto states: “Law is being used as a tool for imposing dogma. One of the consequences of these changes is that the police are increasingly being made the enforcers of political doctrine and moving further away from their traditional role of upholding the delicate balance between Order and Liberty.”

This has had a direct influence in empowering criminals and making the criminal underclass feel that they have more ‘rights’ than their victims. This has resulted in a situation where criminals know they can persecute law abiding citizens and expect little or no comeback for their actions.

Rather than the criminal being dealt with harshly by the police and the justice system, of late it has been the homeowner defending their property that has been the subject of legal action. The English Democrats are completely opposed to this nonsensical policy; we believe that punishing those defending their property against criminals turns the whole English justice system on its head.

The English Democrats welcome the fact that the CPS have decided not to press charges against Cecil Coley. Cecil is an upstanding citizen who has simply done what any right thinking Englishman would have done in those circumstances – defend himself and his property.

We believe this change in approach by the government and the CPS is a direct result of ‘people power’. The recent outcry over people being punished for defending themselves has finally caused those in seats of power to sit up and listen – proving the silent majority can force a shift in policy.

An Englishman’s home is his castle and the defence one's property and person should be a fundamental right.

Perfectly done Cecil, perfectly said ED. I concur entirely with your comment above so will not be making any addendums.

At last common sense as prevailed for once. Nice to see and nice one Cecil.

This man is a hero. I'm pleased the criminals are being treated as such and he has been allowed to go free. For a man of that age to stand up and defend his property against an armed gang is something that should earn him a medal!

Cecil should be applauded by all and held up as a national hero. He has more guts and steel at 72 than most men half his age. He did what any Englishman should - defend himself and his castle.

Well done to him, everyone should be able to act the same, safe in the knowledge the law is on their side. There's not much good that come from America, but one thing is their right to defend their home at all costs. On another note, Cecil isn't English, he's British.

The English language, as spoken and written in England, is an important aspect of English culture. It is strange therefore to see the word "defense" in this article instead of the correct English spelling, defence.

You also refer to "the English Democrat's manifesto". Unless you only have one member, it should read the English Democrats' manifesto.

However, sorry but I have to warn everyone that the judiciary, well one prominant member, Lord Justice Richards in my 2007 High Court application regarding that very fact "An Englishman's Home is his Castle" and that was my right to defend it! He disagreed and stated that old adage' had no place in this world anymore! He refused that my flood defence of my Castle, wasn't allowed, despite HM Gov PPG25 stating "that it is each property owners responsibility to protect their property from flooding" the judges have another view.........

Thanks for pointing out the typos, it's the spell checker in MS Word, it always defaults back to US English rather than UK English and auto-corrects what it thinks is an error, most notably replacing 's' with 'z' and in this case replacing a 'c' with an 's'.
